Hopeful in 2010

By: Marlon | March 12th, 2009 | 7 Comments »

1. I skipped work to watch the Ghana game. I sat in bed and pretended to be ill. ESPN on mute. It’s strange now. This was the first time I invested something into the US nats. I was younger in 2002. Vaguely aware of what was going on. I wince now when I see Frings handle the ball on the line. I think of what could’ve been. Maybe I wouldn’t have seen it, but it would be something look back on and smile at.
No, my first days with the national team weren’t during a glorious run. I remember being told we needed to win to get out of group play. So I skipped out on data entry for the national team. That was the first time they let me down.

2. 2010. It’s like writing inspirational post it notes to myself. 2010. We’ll get them in 2010. We’ll be better then. Michael Bradley will govern midfield. Jozy Altidore will latch onto through balls with Mercurial speed and grace. Freddy Adu? Have you seen the kid’s free-kicks? His dribbling? His potential? Lithely trying to avoid Puyol putting cleats to his ankles. In my eyes that’s noteworthy. One of the world’s better defenders saw one of our player’s as a threat. Someone worth trying to injure.

3. We cite subtle improvements. Border victories. CONCACAF powerhouses. Wunderkid African immigrants. Arsenal looked at one of our kids. Us. Charlie Renken. American CR7? I start wondering if 16 is too young to play in the World Cup. Didn’t Messi do it? What about Pele? Try to be hopeful. Maybe we can take bronze.

4. When Sacha Klejstan scores a hat trick against Sweden do we start garnering world attention? Do teams give us plaudits for things other than fitness? Are things the same?

5. My Irish friends keep rooting for Mexico. Why are they rooting for Mexico?

6. The Confederations Cup is the measurement of how hopeful I can be. How big of a fall I can set myself up for. If I go to South Africa and Brooks Peck is screaming for news updates and I can’t find wifi and I’m writing everything in my notebook am I writing for myself or for my team? Am I going for myself or am I going as a supporter? Or as a “journalist”?

This post is to make my friends Allison and Sterling jealous

Why look! It’s Heather O’Reilly from the FIFA World Player awards! She was there to accept the Presidential award on behalf of the women’s game. I’m not entirely sure what that means but it’s pretty clear it entails hanging out and taking pictures with famous ... [read]

Suffix Cup

The U.S. team had their first of two ING Cup matches in Hong Kong this morning/tonight/tomorrow night? (China time is already messing with my head). Anyway, they played the Ivory Coast at the mostly empty Hong Kong Stadium (seriously — I think there were more people in my bedroom this morning) and ... [read]

Pre-Game Chalk Talk

By: Carter Daly | June 8th, 2008 | 4 Comments »

Ok it’s almost game time at Giants Stadium, lets get into things.
Bob Bradley: You can expect the tactics to be fairly conservative, as always with Bob, but don’t call for his head just yet. People are getting antsy with the gaffer because they think he is building a team without the killer instinct to go for the gut ... [read]

News of the Day

By: Carter Daly | August 8th, 2007 | No Comments »

A few news items today…
-Peter Nowak was officially announced as coach of the U-23 Olympic Squad for the 2008 games in Bejing as expected. I got to thinking of the squad a little bit more and another player I really want to see is Stuart Holden (the American (sorta) Beckham). I say sorta because Stuart has a chance ... [read]

The Biggest Little Scumbag in the Game

I hate Lionel Messi with a fiery passion that haunts my soul at night.
It’s true.
Many say he is the next big thing, the next Maradonut, and that is only where his problems begin. First off there is nothing big about Messi at all. His height (5′7″) at this stage in his life legally qualifies him ... [read]

Big Benny?/ I am an idiot

As I was reviewing the 2007 Copa America roster on ussoccer.com I came across someone from the official establishment maybe playing a little prank. No, I’m not talking about Bob Bradley putting Drew Moor and Ben Olsen on the roster. Take a look:
“5 Feilhaber, Benny M 5′9″ 150 01/19/85 7/1 Irvine, Calif. Hamburger SV (Germany)”
No, ... [read]

ABC/ESPN Announce World Cup Roster

By: Daryl | May 15th, 2006 | 35 Comments »

Under the impression that FIFA’s May 15 roster deadline also applied to them, ABC/ESPN announced their World Cup roster today.
It’s top pairing will be the Dave O’Brien/Marcelo Balboa combo that so delighted us during the Poland friendly, they’ll take all the US games. This makes them the Brian McBride/Landon Donovan ... [read]

Right Midfield Is The New Left Back

By: Daryl | May 12th, 2006 | 12 Comments »

Brown is the new black, Messi is the new Maradona and, for USA fans, right midfield is the new left back.
Remember all the panic about left backs? All gone now, as Eddie Lewis is more or less locked in. But right midfield?
This decent Soccernet article probably correctly assumes it’s ... [read]

35 Player Pool Won’t Be Announced

By: Daryl | April 12th, 2006 | 2 Comments »

One eagle eyed World Cup Blog reader (thanks Mike!) spotted this hidden in the USsoccer.com match report from last nights game:
“U.S. Soccer is no longer planning to announce a 35-player pool on April 12 as originally announced.”
I take this to mean either Arena will write down 35 names but they won’t be made public knowledge, or Arena has changed ... [read]
